Zu Dominiak

Zu Dominiak is a Polish-born artist and cartoonist who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh and went on to pursue their PhD research in comics at the University of Dundee. Their creative practice involves formalist experimentation and pushing the boundaries of the medium. Zu also creates science and public information comics, addressing issues from patient experiences to disseminating research on malaria, which are authored in collaboration with other individuals and institutions. Zu’s PhD research looks at use of comics in exhibitions, and how this can ensure a more engaging environment for learning.

“Historically comics have been viewed in the UK as a medium for children and illiterate people. While this has been disproven, this opinion still lingers. Reading visual narratives requires a separate skillset in addition to the ability of reading the text. Creating comics not only demands storytelling skills, but also designing characters and the world they inhabit. This may sound complicated, but can also be a lot of fun!” Zu Dominiak

In March 2019 we invited Zu to join our POLSKI project – the unique Polish artists-in-residence project which we have been curating at Abbeyhill Primary School since 2016. During her POLSKI residency at the school, Joanna worked on a new comic book project with Primary 5.

“We were very pleased to welcome Zu – our first ever cartoonist-in-residence in the classroom. We looked forward to each of the weekly sessions with Zu and worked hard while running our imagination wild. While creating our own comics we developed our listening drawing, writing and storytelling skills, even a bit of maths. We are so honoured that Zu has collated the best strips created during the seven weekly sessions in the classrooms and edited them into a beautiful anthology comic! With its public premiere at the 14th edition of our favourite annual Colony of Artists festival, our anthology is also a fantastic addition to our Abbeyhill Primary School library! Sam Chetwynd, Primary 5 Class Teacher

“Zu thought us how to do our cartoon strips like pros. We worked on our own stories but also in teams. It was so much fun for one of us to start the strip and another to finish it… We are so proud to be now published cartoonists with our own Anthology edited by Zu.” Amelia Byrne, Primary 5 Pupil

“Ever since we started co-curating the POLSKI project in 2015 we have been led by the diverse interests and professional practice of over 10 Polish artists-in-residence at Abbeyhill Primary School. It is great to look back and reflect that we have introduced over 200 young people to various forms of contemporary art and creative industries through our Polish filmmakers, photographers, ceramists, sculptors and musicians-in-residence. Zu’s residency with Primary 5 brought the wonders of yet another aspect of visual storytelling another 26 artists-to-be” Patrycja Godula
