Kristin Mojsiewicz

Kristin Mojsiewicz is an artist and lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. She is a co-director of Brass Art — a collaborative arts practice with Chara Lewis and Anneke Pettican and most recently presented Gestured — an Arts and Heritage commission in response to Chetham’s Library Collection, Manchester. Kristin’s solo video works have screened internationally from Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki to Centre for Contemporary Art Warsaw.

Kristin was invited as one of the artist-in-residence at Abbeyhill Primary School working with Primary 6 pupils throughout the academic year 2017/18 as part of the ongoing Polski project. The residency included an exploratory class trip to The Great Polish Map of Scotland, known as Mapa Scotland, just ahead of its official re-opening in April 2018. Kristin and her young co-artists looked at landscapes and scale models afresh, working from observation and their imagination to produce drawings and sculptures.

Despite the chilly conditions at Mapa Scotland, the pupils drew outside, navigating their way around the 50m 3D concrete structure surrounded by ‘sea’, and then worked with clay and papier-mâché to create an archipelago of miniature landscapes based on their pencil drawings.

Mapa Project Manager Keith Burns gave a talk about the terrain relief model, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world. Built on a scale of 1:10000 and sited in Eddleston, near Peebles, Mapa Scotland was given a category B listed building status since its massive refurbishment programme.

“We were so intrigued to hear about those summers that the Polish university students spent making the concrete sculpture during the 1970s. How the derelict sculpture came to be rediscovered in the 1990s. How the grounds at Mapa Scotland were once used for the training of the Polish Air Force Officers who protected the British Isles during the Second World War. It was so inspiring to experience this significant site first hand, through our own creativity, reflecting on ideas of heritage, geography, languages, gratitude and history.” Keith Martin, Principal Teacher
